What is it?

The Overview Video is a unique and flexible offering that addresses the breastfeeding community’s desire for flexible, evidence-based training solutions that meet the range of needs and budgets for individuals and organizations. The video includes brief summaries on the core practices that are the foundation for the Baby-Friendly Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. It can serve as a preview for further training or can stand alone as a helpful overview for stakeholders in the hospital or community, such as patient care technicians or outpatient medical assistants, for whom longer training is not required or feasible.

Birthing center nurses are busy. Training requirements are added on from multiple directions. The Overview Video values the nurses’ time by fulfilling a variety of different hospital priorities, including, The Joint Commission, mPINC, patient satisfaction, and general quality improvement. It also inspires nurses to move forward with their professional development by encouraging and inspiring participation in real change, through improvement in counseling skills and participation in task force activities. It is a good choice for birthing centers that have not yet made the commitment to further training and are in the introductory phase of a breastfeeding initiative.

Many prenatal outpatient clinics employ medical assistants and front office workers who do not have professional education requirements. They would benefit from a shorter offering such as this one-hour video, which informs them about the basics of breastfeeding and the evidence-based practices that support it.

Most professional staff training on breastfeeding is only applicable to the hospital setting. The Overview Video organizes the key content on breastfeeding science, promotion, and support into a doable, shorter curriculum that pulls hardworking community professionals into a coordinated effort extending beyond the birthing center walls.

The Overview Video can be used for department-wide training of WIC leadership and staff to create a seamless message between the hospital and the agency that serves so many of our mothers and babies.
